VICE-CHANCELLORS PRIZE
MARTIN STRAWSON
PRO-CHANCELLOR, VICE-CHANCELLOR, TREASURER
The Vice-Chancellor's Prize is awarded each year to a final year
undergraduate and takes into account not only scholarship, but also
personality, leadership and initiative.
This year's prize winner is a student in Biological Sciences. His
academic achievements have been outstanding throughout his studies and
he has received several prizes, most notably the R.T. Jones Prize awarded
annually in the first year of studies to a student judged to have an
outstanding personality and to have made a major contribution to the life
of the University and the community, whilst maintaining a high academic
standard - extremely difficult to achieve early in the course. To this have
been added the Institute of Biology Essay Prize the Heslop Memorial
Prize and various prizes from the Society for General Microbiology. At
this Congregation he has just been awarded a first class degree.
Throughout his time at University he has made a significant contribution
to student life in general and to his School in particular. Studying abroad
in France for a year he drew on his experience to advise and counsel other
students thinking of studying there. His further commitment was
demonstrated by a flying visit back to Birmingham from Montpellier to
assist at the visitation of the Quality Assurance Agency to his School. He
has made further contributions as a member of the School's Staff Student
Liason Committee, the Student Accommodation Committee, and latterly
as the Chair of Council of the Guild of Students.
A student who is highly regarded by both the staff and his peers as a
helpful considerate and understanding colleague,
Vice-Chancellor, I am pleased to present to you, your own prize winner,
